Diaper Decisions Great Cloth Diaper Hunt
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Washing ... where do I start?
A: This is the most common question in cloth diapering and really it couldn't be simpler. We always suggest to go by the manufactures washing instructions, most suggest a rise, wash in hot/warm water with little or no detergent and either line dry or tumble dry.

Q: How do a chose a diaper pail?
A: There are several pails on the market labeled as diaper pails. However, you can use any type of pail for your diapers. You will want to consider the size of the pail to make sure it will hold the amount of diapers which would correspond with how often you wish to do diaper laundry. Also, you may want a pail which closes tight to eliminate any odors and little hands from reaching in as your child gets older.

Q: What's a good starter CD? Is it always user preference? Do you just keep trying them until you find one that you like?
A: User preference does have a lot to say in the diapering system you chose. Many will start with prefolds and covers which is one of the basics in cloth diapering and one of the most economical options. All-in-ones are often refered to as "Daddy diapers" or "Grandparent diapers" simply because they are essentially the cloth diaper answer to a disposables simplicity. All-in-twos and pocket diapers are also a convenient choice as they can be stuffed/snapped in advance, all-in-twos are a great transition diaper from prefolds and covers to all-in-ones as you can replace the snap-in and reuse the cover. Another very important point to consider is your baby and what fits best. Many mothers find the diaper they used on their infant wasn't necessarily the diaper they reached for when baby became mobile or started solids.

Q: Do you always wear covers over the diapers to prevent leaks?
A: No, only prefolds and fitted diapers require a diaper cover. You have several options for cloth diapering without covers including pocket diapers, all-in-ones and all-in-twos. An alternative to covers is a wool soaker.

Q: Is it possible to go to CD if you've been using disposables for months first? E.g. when potty training an older toddler?
A: Of course! In the case of potty training you may wish to consider cloth training pants as an alternative to pull-ups. The wonderful thing about training pants is they look very much like real underwear can help the child feel like they have graduated from diapers.

Q: How hard would it be to CD at home if your child is in daycare that HAS to use disposables?
A: Not hard at all, you might not need the same quantity of diapers to stay on the same washing schedule. Plus there would be great savings in part-time cloth diapering, not to mention the benefit to babys bum. You may find the daycare provider isn't familier with many of the cloth diapering options on the market and have a no cloth diapering policy based on an idea cloth diapering is all about flannel squares, pins and rubber pants. It is always a good idea to bring in your diapers and a wet bag so your provider knows exactly what you are asking of them. Many are open to the idea once they have seen the more modern diapers available and realize they are no more work than disposables.
